One of the reasons I am excited about the possibility of joining Santa Barbara City College’s (SBCC) Board of Trustees is that I want to give back to this institution that has given so much to me and my family. With the opening of a Board seat in my residential area, which is SBCC’s Trustee Area 4, and with my own retirement status I have the ability and passion to serve. When I stepped away from teaching history full-time at SBCC in 2015, it was the right thing for me at that time. Today, after reflecting seriously on what would bring me back to the campus, I realize that my experiences as part of the SBCC Academic Senate impacted me greatly. The fact that I could work on the campus’ big picture during the entire academic year instead of being mainly concerned with the History department made it possible for me to bring all of my professional training and background to bear on improving the lives of students and all constituents of the College. I really enjoyed that.

Also, I chose this particular photo because it is from an interview I did with the campus’ student run newspaper, The Channels. I feel that it captures my sense of anticipation about retiring from teaching, and that drawing hanging on the wall was done by my son Devon when he was in the 6th grade. Devon was an SBCC student, so for me, this 2015 photo seems perfect for reflecting my new anticipation going into this 2024 run for the SBCC Board of Trustees.

I have appreciated my leisurely activities with my family since I’ve been away from SBCC. We traveled, enjoyed holidays and other special times together, much like you and yours.  At the same time, however, looking forward to the next year and beyond, I have not only been paying attention to many of the possibilities and challenges facing higher education during these important times I feel drawn to get involved. With my background, experience, and available time, I want to make a positive difference and contribute to the good work that SBCC’s Board of Trustees is doing to strengthen this community treasure and resource. I am ready and able to roll up my sleeves and get back to work as SBCC moves into the next stages of growth and development. I hope you will follow my campaign and support me as the next Trustee for SBCC’s Trustee Area 4.
